Network licenses of Flamingo nXt can be shared using the Zoo – the same license manager used for network installations of Rhino3d. Interesting features include a 3D tree library useful for architects and urban designers, alpha channel support for post processing and a number of post processing effects including lighting channels, glare, haze and glow. Should more power be required, an unlimited amount of ‘render slaves’ can be added at extra cost. Whilst blurry reflections and complex shadows will need quite a few passes to refine, the overall scene can be viewed after one or two passes and, if judged that adjustments to (for example) lighting or materials are needed, the render can be stopped without having to wait for the detailed render to complete.įlamingo nXt supports network rendering as standard and the processing power of two additional machines can be harnessed to speed up renders. We were given a V-Ray packet on how to change the settings for a base rendering and given tips on how to adjust those settings to customize our rendering to our specific desired outcome. In autumn quarter (2012), we had a supplementary studio course (ARCH 315) that helped us with all kinds of programs, including V-Ray, PhotoShop. But V-Ray seems to be a more well-known program in the rendering world and, therefore, has more online tutorials. If you’re trying to figure it out by yourself, it takes a lot more trials and errors to get a desired outcome than Flamingo. Many of the labels for the different settings aren’t easily recognizable for the exact task they perform. V-Ray, on the other hand, takes a little more understanding than Flamingo. It seems to lay everything out in a way that even the newest user can figure out for decent renderings. However, if you’re determined to figure it out on your own, the Flamingo interface is more user-friendly. I think that with the right tutorials and knowledge either program can make a really good rendering. With the help of the Flamingo tutorial I learned a lot about different kinds of lights (spotlights, point lights, etc.) and how to edit them to make the space look how you wanted it to. I had only ever used rendering for exterior perspectives or interior perspectives looking outside to the surrounding site.

I found an interior lighting tutorial online that took me through the steps of how to use interior lights and I made a night rendering of my space. For our rendering assignment, I used Flamingo and found that although the quality might not be as good sometimes, it was easier to understand how to change settings than in V-Ray. Like I said, I’ve used both equally but don’t know all that much about either. Rhino has two plug-ins that I go back and forth between using: Flamingo, which is specifically designated for Rhino, and V-Ray.
